The moonwalk is a dance move in which the dancer moves backwards while appearing to move forwards.  A popping move, it became popular around the world after Michael Jackson performed the dance move during a performance of " Billie Jean " on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever on March 25, 1983. This special was broadcast May 16, 1983.  It subsequently became his signature move .

The book was first published by Doubleday on February 1, 1988, five months after the release of Jackson's 1987 Bad album, and named after Jackson's signature dance move , the moonwalk . The book was edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and reached number one on the New York Times Best Seller list . The book was reissued by Doubleday on October 13, 2009 following Jackson's death on June 25, 2009.
